Pilates is an exacting method, dependent on competently trained instructors and comprehensively educated teachers. According to The Pilates Method Alliance (the professional association dedicated to the teachings of Joseph H. and Clara Pilates), more than 10,000 people in the U.S. claim to be Pilates instructors. Yet some have only read books or viewed videos, others taking condensed weekend workshops, receiving "certification" on particular pieces of equipment. The Pilates Method Alliance's Position Statement on Pilates succinctly clarifies what is and is NOT Pilates, providing a clear distinction between classes offered through large recreation centers and health clubs touting "Pilates core conditioning", and Classic Pilates as developed by Joseph H. Pilates, and taught since 1926. |

The fact is, experience-based Pilates training does make a difference. Competent Pilates teachers take years to develop their skills and their gifts, completing programs requiring comprehensive, in-depth study of the Pilates Method and all of the related equipment. They develop the skills necessary to ensure client safety and the efficacy of this body movment program. The Pilates Center, an internationally renowned teaching institution, offers the most rigorous Pilates certification program available, requiring completion of 60 lecture hours and 750 internship hours. Their program and Master Teachers (none with less than 15 years of teaching and Pilates training experience) produce the highest caliber trainers who want (and are able) to educate people about their health – not just the use of a particular piece of equipment. Their graduates are professionally equipped to offer clients a comprehensive knowledge of all Pilates apparatus; advance communi-cation skills and cueing techniques; an in- |
